Megan’s Birth Story
I gave birth at home, in the space where I eat, sleep, laugh, and live—and I can honestly say it was the most anchored I’ve ever felt in my own body.
Labour began quietly. I woke up around 3 a.m. with a familiar tightening in my lower belly. It wasn’t dramatic—just a slow awareness that something had shifted. I lay there in the half-dark, breathing, watching the shadows on the wall. It felt surreal to know my baby would be here soon, and I was still in my own bed.
By morning, things had picked up enough that I didn’t want to be alone. I called the midwife, texted my sister, and lit the same candle I’d used during every relaxation practice throughout my pregnancy. That small ritual helped me feel ready.
As contractions strengthened, I moved instinctively. I laboured in the living room, leaning over the back of the sofa, pacing, pausing to sway through each wave. My partner stayed close, quietly timing contractions and offering sips of water. There was no pressure, no rush. Just presence.
When the midwife arrived, she simply joined the rhythm we had already created. She didn’t interrupt or instruct—she observed, offered encouragement, and gently checked in. I never once felt like I was being “managed.” I felt like I was being witnessed.
Eventually I got into the birth pool, and the relief was immediate. The water cradled me. The room was dim, warm, and still. I remember thinking, “This feels how birth is meant to feel—not clinical, not sterile, but human. Raw, yes—but also deeply calm.”
The pushing stage was intense, but not frightening. I felt powerful, like I was meeting something ancient in myself. When my baby finally emerged, I reached down and brought them to my chest. That moment will live with me for the rest of my life. I can’t describe it without crying—it was peaceful, emotional, and strangely ordinary all at once.
We stayed in the pool for a while, just us. Eventually I got out, dried off, and we snuggled into bed. The midwives checked us over, did all the necessary things, and tidied up. When they left, it was as though they’d never been there—except, of course, for the baby asleep on my chest.
Looking back, I don’t romanticise my birth—it was work. It demanded everything from me. But I was prepared, informed, supported, and respected. And because of that, I can say with certainty that giving birth at home was the most grounded, empowering experience of my life.
